Slice of Life for the Extinct
These paleontological reconstructions of Tarbosaurus bataar, Smilodon fatalis, and Daeodon shoshonesis respectively depict slice of life scenes in opposition to the old, dramatic cliches of the genre. Rather than seeing these animals locked in a life or death struggle these scenes demonstrate unique features of the depicted animals in mundane contexts. For example, the juvenile Smilodon standing against the tree displays their adaptation towards lumbar stability that may have allowed them to stand, freeing their forelimbs to grapple with large prey.
